Crochet a Beaded Hat: My "Crowned with Kindness" Journey

My goal has always been to make a positive difference through my work, whether hand-making a special gift for someone or teaching fellow makers the techniques my mom, grandma, aunts, and other makers have been kind enough to teach me.

This project began with my friend Liz's elderly mom, who could no longer crochet or knit, gifting me yarn. She had been following my work online and asked Liz, "Do you think Renée would like this yarn?" When Liz told me, it brought tears to my eyes, and I said, "Absolutely!" After receiving the yarn, I focused on designing something meaningful and unique.

Winter was coming upon us, so I felt a beanie would be a great idea because it is an easy and portable project that people love to make, gift, and receive. However, the beanie had to have a unique feature. Since I love adding beans to crochet, I thought, "Why not add beads to the hat!" After making the first beanie prototypes with round beads, I felt something was missing.

I frogged and started again. When I arrived at the part where I was supposed to add beads, I thought, "I want this beanie to make people smile... Ah! Smiley-face beads!" I started experimenting with smiley-face beads of different sizes. I eventually found high-quality beads that were the correct sizes for the beanies.

I needed to decide on the number of beads to add to the beanie, and I admit that I first had way too many beads! 😬 🫣 Thankfully, I found a good number balance for the beads, simplified the stitches and techniques for making the beanies, worked on sizing options, and finalized the design.

First prototypes - whoa, that's a lot of beads! 😆

When I came up with the Crowned with Kindness design, I decided to gift any beanies I made. I have been making and donating/gifting Crowned with Kindness hats for some time, and the recipients have been appreciative and uplifted, which brings me joy. I will continue to make and gift Crowned with Kindness beanies for as long I am able. If this project helps, even in a small way, anyone who can use a little extra kindness in their life, then I am happy. I hope you also enjoy the design! 💃🏻 💕 🧶
